About Us
Into the World of Sencha
Loved by Tanomura Chikuden
Tanomura Chikuden was a Bunjin (scholar-artist) of the Edo period. Alongside his art and philosophy, he always kept a cup of sencha. For him, tea was not about expensive utensils or rigid etiquette, but a free and enriching time for quiet conversation with close friends, or with oneself.
We hope to revive this spirit of 'Bunjin-cha' (literati tea) for the modern world in the land of pure water, Nagayu Onsen.
Our Story
"Couldn't there be a way for everyone to freely enjoy the tranquility of a cup of tea and the quiet moments of self-reflection in daily life?"
On a journey to find that answer, I encountered the way of life of the Edo-period scholar-artist, Tanomura Chikuden.
For him, tea was not a ceremony, but the very essence of a free and enriching time for dialogue with himself and his friends. And as he said, "Read books and take the minds of the ancient sages as your master," he found joy in elevating his spirit with books always by his side. In his way of life, I saw the ideal I wished to share through tea.
In search of a place to give this vision form, I arrived at Nagayu Onsen, a land renowned for its pure water. Delicious tea requires good water, and the pristine water of this region brings out the delicate aroma and flavor of the tea leaves to their fullest potential.
What we are opening here is not just a simple teahouse. It is a "cultural space for enriching the soul," where you can delve into the old books Chikuden loved with a cup of sencha by your side, let your mind wander with the nature of Nagayu outside the window, and immerse yourself in a quiet, personal moment.
Why not take a brief step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life for a rest for the soul? I sincerely look forward to the day I can meet you all in this place.
Future Plans
We plan to create a space for you to relax by following the steps below.
Phase 1: Experience Workshops
We will start with reservation-only Sencha Experience workshops on weekends. We aim to build our operational foundation while listening to your feedback.
Phase 2: Café Operations
In addition to workshops, we will open as a café where guests can enjoy tea without a reservation. We aim to be a gathering place for locals and travelers.
Phase 3: Overnight Stays
In the future, we envision adding lodging to provide an immersive, overnight experience where guests can deeply connect with the nature of Nagayu Onsen and the world of Bunjin-cha.
